The project is named in honour of Nawal el Saadawi (1931-2021) — Egyptian feminist writer, physician and activist who spent her life exposing the intersection of colonialism, patriarchy and violence against women.

She was imprisoned, exiled and censored. She never stopped writing.

These are colonial legacies that translate into structural systems of oppression against women — and migrant women carry the weight of them today.

Nawal aims to create spaces for truth-telling, justice and reconciliation for women.

Who we are

We are six feminist organisations rooted in migrant women's experiences in Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Ukraine. Over the next two years, migrant and refugee women across these countries will document, bear witness, and reclaim their place in Europe.
