ENoMW Statement
The European Network of Migrant Women is deeply concerned by the ongoing pattern of arrests, judicial harassment, and intimidation targeting women human rights defenders in Tunisia. The persecution of advocates, including Sihem Ben Sedrine and Saadia Mosbah, represents a grave assault on fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
Although women played a critical role in shaping Tunisia’s democratic transition, it is considered a profound betrayal of the spirit of the Tunisian Revolution that they now face reprisals for defending the very freedoms they fought to establish. Such actions violate Tunisia’s constitutional guarantees and international human rights obligations, specifically Article 7 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) regarding participation in political and public life.
ENoMW Calls on the Tunisian Authorities to:
- End all forms of harassment, arbitrary detention, and judicial persecution.
- Uphold the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and due process.
- Ensure human rights defenders can carry out their legitimate work freely and safely without fear of retaliation.
The continued targeting of these individuals not only threatens them personally but also undermines Tunisia’s democratic institutions and shrinks the civic space essential to a democratic society.
