Concerns over proposed legalisation of pimping in Romania

ENoMW Letter to ESC of Romania

It came to our attention that there is a legislative proposal underway in Romania to legalise pimping.

We are shocked that such proposal was developed without any proper scrutiny as to its consequences, and without proper broad consultation with feminist organisations in Romania.

Romania is the country of origin, transit and destination of trafficking for sexual exploitation, and women from Romania, including Roma women, are disproportionately impacted in the system of prostitution.

We are pleased that, following multiple letters from feminist groups, including the Brussels Call coordinated by the European Women’s Lobby, the Economic and Social Council of Romania voted down this proposal; however, we remain deeply concerned that such a proposal was initiated in the first place and remains under consideration in the legislative chamber.

We are very grateful to our sisters from eLiberare in Romania for leading the fight in defence of women’s dignity and right not to be prostituted.

We will be closely monitoring this situation.
