On 25 November 1960, the Mirabal sisters were murdered for resisting a dictatorship. ๐๐ข๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฒ-๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐๐ซ, ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฌ๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง.
The forms of violence have changed, but the logic is the same: ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ง๐จ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฑ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฌ.
Violence against women ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฌ, ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐๐ข๐๐. It is also the ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐ฌ that turn womenโs bodies into ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ, ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐. What dictators once imposed with guns is now enforced by markets and ideologies that ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ ๐๐ฌ to be bought and sold.
– ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง is promoted as โworkโ and โchoiceโ, yet in reality it is a system where men buy access to women and girls whose options are shaped by abuse, poverty, migration, racism and trauma.
– ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ, which is filmed prostitution, is sold as entertainment and fantasy, while it is in fact a multibillion-dollar industry that records and broadcasts womenโs abuse and commodification.
– ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ markets package pregnancy as kindness and altruism while outsourcing risks to poorer women. The woman becomes the service, the baby the product.
At the same time, the very foundations of womenโs rights ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐. Our rights were won on the recognition that women are ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฑ. When laws, data and services ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ ๐ง๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฑ, women lose ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐, ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง-๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ฌ, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ง๐๐ฆ๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ.
When ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง is normalised, ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ defended as freedom, ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ marketed askindness, and ๐ฌ๐๐ฑ erased from law, this is not liberation. ๐๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง.
This yearโs theme focuses on ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐. The internet is now a major theatre of violence: ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ง ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฌ profit from rape, coercion, image-based sexual exploitation and the sexualisation of girls; ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐๐๐ข๐ amplifies misogynistic abuse, threats and harassment; with coordinated smear campaigns targeting women, especially those who speak out about ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐, ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ก๐ฒ, ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฑ-๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ. Ending violence against women and girls in digital spaces ๐ซ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ the industries, systems and ideologies that fuel it.
